A fabrication shop quotes a job from a drawing and then lives with the quote. Plate and section are nested, cut, fitted, welded, finished and inspected, and each step consumes hours and material that were estimated before anyone picked up a torch. The difference between the estimate and what the job actually used is the margin, and it is usually discovered at the end.
