Paint is made in batches from a formulation that rarely comes out right first time: the batch is tinted and thinned until shade, viscosity and drying time pass. Every adjustment changes the cost of that batch. Raw materials — resins, pigments, solvents — vary by lot, and when a customer reports a defect the maker needs to know exactly which lots went in.
