Software for Plywood and Panel Manufacturing

Log-to-board conversion — peeling, drying, gluing and pressing — where veneer recovery and press cycles decide the cost per sheet.

A plywood mill buys logs by volume and sells boards by sheet and grade. In between, logs are peeled into veneer, dried, graded, glued and pressed. Recovery — how much saleable board comes out of each cubic metre of log — is the economics, and it varies with log quality and operator. Resin consumption and press cycles are the other two numbers that matter.

What gets in the way

  • Log volume bought is never reconciled against board produced
  • Veneer grading is subjective and unrecorded
  • Resin consumption per press load is estimated
  • Press cycle times and downtime are not logged
  • Rejected boards are downgraded without being counted

What the software handles

  • Logs received by volume and species
  • Peeling and drying recorded with veneer output by grade
  • Glue spreading recorded with resin consumption
  • Press loads recorded with cycle time
  • Finished boards graded and counted by thickness

What changes

  • Recovery per cubic metre of log
  • Resin cost per sheet
  • Press utilisation per shift
