n8n is a workflow automation tool that can run on your own server. That makes it a good fit when you want the flexibility of an automation platform — connecting your business system to email, chat, spreadsheets and other services — but prefer that data does not pass through a third-party cloud.

How it works
- An n8n workflow starts with a webhook trigger, and its URL is registered in your system for chosen events.
- When an event happens, the system sends it to n8n.
- The workflow applies its steps — conditions, lookups, transformations — and calls other services.
- Where the workflow needs to update the business system, it calls the system's API with a scoped credential.

Good to know
- A self-hosted n8n instance needs someone to keep it updated, backed up and secure, like any other server.
- n8n's licence allows self-hosting for internal business use, with some conditions on other uses. Check the current licence terms for your case.
- Workflows built by non-developers should still be reviewed before they change business data, because a mistake can repeat on every event.
