UPI is how many Indian customers prefer to pay, and PhonePe is one of the apps they use most. A PhonePe merchant integration lets your system raise a payment request for the exact amount and know when it has been paid, rather than a staff member checking their phone for a credit message.

How it works

  1. A bill is saved at the counter, or an invoice is sent with a pay link.
  2. The system asks PhonePe to create a payment request for that amount with a unique transaction reference.
  3. The customer pays by scanning a code or following the link in their UPI app.
  4. PhonePe calls your system back with the result, which is verified and recorded against the bill.
  5. Settlement reports are matched against recorded payments at the end of the day.

What is needed to set it up

  • A PhonePe merchant account
  • Merchant credentials configured server-side
  • Callback URL registration

Good to know

  • Any fees are set by PhonePe for your merchant account and depend on payment method.
  • Customers can pay from any UPI app, not only PhonePe, when paying through a UPI request or code.
  • Network delays sometimes leave a payment pending for a short time, so the system checks the final status before marking the bill paid.
